Naver passport verification for foreigners: 4 rules and why it fails

Naver sent you to a Korean phone number screen, or turned down your passport without saying why. The threads we read from June to September have both. Naver passport verification, open since 4 June 2026, lets foreigners without a Korean number confirm their identity with a passport for reservations, orders and payments, mainly on Naver Map. Naver's help page lists four passport rules. It gives no menu path and no list of rejection reasons.

We read Naver's Korean help page and its English version on 2 October 2026, then set them next to the reports people posted between June and September. Below, each point is marked as Naver's wording or as user reports. We did not run a verification ourselves, so nothing here is a first-hand test.

What does Naver passport verification unlock?

Naver's help page says foreigners who use reservation or ordering services can verify with a passport during that flow. Naver's press release of 9 June names Naver Map reservations, orders and payments, and says you need neither a Korean number nor a support ticket, only a smartphone.

That covers the things K-pop travellers book through Naver Map: a restaurant near the venue, a hair or makeup slot before a concert, and pop-ups or exhibitions that take Naver reservations. In August and September the BIGBANG exhibition in Seoul was one of those.

It is not a key to all of Naver. A YouTube description calls it "full access to all Naver functions", which Naver's documents do not say. Etnews reported on 4 June that Naver plans to extend it to Naver Pay, Naver Webtoon and Chzzk. That is a plan, with no date. Naver Cafe fan cafes and Smart Store are not mentioned anywhere we looked.

The four passport rules, in Naver's words

The Korean help page accepts a passport only if all four of these are true:

  • Issued outside Korea. 대한민국 외 국가에서 발급한 여권: a passport from any country other than South Korea.
  • Not used on another Naver ID. 다른 아이디에서 인증하지 않은 여권. One passport cannot verify a second account.
  • Not expired. The page gives no minimum remaining validity, so 6 months left is not a stated requirement.
  • Your name and date of birth match your sign-up details. The page says they must match what you entered when you created the Naver account.

You need the physical passport. The app photographs it live through the camera, then runs a face check against the passport photo. Naver asks you to lay the passport flat, avoid glare, use bright light, keep your whole face in the frame, and follow the on-screen movements.

How to do Naver passport verification: where is the button?

Naver does not say. The help page only says verification happens "during" a reservation or ordering flow.

Two r/koreatravel threads point to the Naver Map app. A reply from 14 June describes it as: open the app, tap the booking icon, then tap the search bar, adding "This is naver map app not naver app btw". An iOS thread from 21 August says the option only showed up after the Map app was set to a foreign language. Neither settles whether the main Naver app has the option too. If you searched for Naver app passport verification and found nothing there, try this reported Naver Maps passport verification route instead.

Switching Naver Map to English is official. Naver's Map help page gives the path: on Android, MY (profile icon), then the gear icon, then Language; on iOS, the phone's Settings, then NAVER Map, then Preferred Language. The page says this needs Map app version 5.1.3 or later. We found no official way to switch the main Naver app's interface to English.

Why does Naver passport verification fail?

Naver gives passport requirements and camera guidance. The user reports further down describe problems whose causes we could not confirm.

What Naver's help page asks you to check

  • Camera access not allowed for the app.
  • A dark room, which the page says can make recognition fail. It also asks you to avoid glare.
  • Face not fully inside the frame during the face check.
  • A passport that breaks one of the four rules: Korean-issued, already used on another ID, expired, or a name and birth date that differ from your account.

What users report (cause not confirmed by Naver)

If you searched for Naver passport verification on Reddit, these are the reports we found in r/koreatravel threads and YouTube comments:

  • Rejected with no reason. A viewer from Australia wrote under a YouTube Short in August that it "keeps coming back saying sorry, but no. They won't even say what I'm doing wrong."
  • Sent to a Korean phone number screen. An 18 July reply says the next screen required a Korean number with no skip option. A 29 August reply describes a different route: the passport icon opened the profile page, and tapping Edit led to Korean phone number entry.
  • The option never appears. An iOS user with a fresh account could not see it at all (r/koreatravel, 16 June). Another user guessed it was hidden because they had already gone through Naver's older document check for foreigners.
  • No birth date on the account. One iOS user found their profile had no date of birth. The reply they got: birth dates are set at sign-up and cannot be changed in the app, so the advice was to send Naver's help center a ticket with ID.

Trying it before you land

Naver does not say whether it works from abroad. Alchera, the parent of the verification vendor, describes on its case study page a step that checks immigration stay records to confirm the user is actually in Korea. If that step applies to every attempt, a try from home could fail. This is our inference from a vendor page, not something Naver states, so the safer plan is to try after you arrive.

Passport verification is not the old ID upload

Some forum answers describe a different process. Foreigners can also send an ID copy to Naver's customer center to confirm their legal name. That older process is still on the help pages, and Naver warns it can take time because of manual review and time differences. The passport check runs inside the app and, Naver says, needs no support ticket. Naver does not promise it is instant or say how you can tell it succeeded; one user in September asked exactly that after the face scan returned them to their profile page. A real booking is the test.

Which October K-pop events actually need Naver?

Before you spend an evening on this, check the booking channel of the event you care about. Of the October K-pop pop-ups and exhibitions we checked on 2 October, none used Naver reservations:

  • TWS pop-up TWIMI: 42 Forest in Seongsu (28 September to 4 October): advance booking on Weverse.
  • NCT exhibition NEO DIMENSION at Lotte World, Jamsil (18 September to 18 October): tickets on Melon Ticket.

That list is not complete. Check whether the restaurant or salon you want to visit uses Naver for bookings before you spend time on verification. For what is on stage this month, see our October 2026 Seoul concert list.

A checklist before you try

  1. Check that the name and birth date on your Naver account match your passport. If the birth date is missing, contact Naver's help center first.
  2. Update Naver Map and try setting it to English. The 5.1.3 minimum in Naver's help applies to the language setting; we found no minimum version for passport verification.
  3. Allow camera access for Naver Map.
  4. Open a booking in Naver Map and look for passport verification in that flow.
  5. Do it in a bright room with the passport flat on a table, ideally after you have entered Korea.

Questions about Naver passport verification

Can I do Naver passport verification without a Korean phone number?

Yes, that is its purpose. Naver says a smartphone is enough. Some users still report being sent to a Korean number screen, and the Naver pages we checked do not explain why.

Can I use the same passport on two Naver accounts?

No. The help page accepts only a passport that has not been verified on another ID.

Does passport verification work for Naver Pay and Naver Cafe?

Naver's documents cover reservations, orders and payments on travel services such as Naver Map. Etnews reported plans for Naver Pay, Webtoon and Chzzk without dates. Naver Cafe is not mentioned.

Checked on 2026-10-02 against Naver Help Center pages 25234, 25235, 20897 and 8275, Naver's press release of 9 June 2026, and Korea Times and Etnews reports. User reports are quoted from public Reddit and YouTube posts dated June to September 2026 and are labelled as such.
